SnowShoe

The Snowshoe Trail system has two different starting locations – one is Legacy Park, the other is the Souris Striders lower parking lot. Both start locations see the user having access to the 1.5k Legacy Loop. This loop has some significant sites to see – including the commemorative trees within Legacy Park, MacVarish’s Pond, Wishbone’s Pond, the Artesian Well, and some Railway infrastructure that is still visible to this day. Midway through this loop, at the signed junction, the trail user can commit to the additional 1.8k Striders Snowshoe Loop. This is slightly more austere and narrow, providing the snowshoer a much more immersive feeling, walking through varying stands of hardwood and softwood, as well as navigating adjacent to the Souris River. At the midway point, this trail dovetails with the Souris Striders ski trails, where the user can further commit to the Meteorite Loop. This loop heads west all the way to Charlie’s Loop and then follows the forestry access roads and is around 2.7k total. The user then merges with the Snowshoe Loop and the Legacy Loop to return to either trailhead. Sights within this system are “Fred’s Meteorite” – a glacial erratic located at the beginning of the trail system, a bridge crossing over a small tributary of the Souris River which is spring-fed, as well as a location where you can walk into a large spring head for a rest or a drink of water!
