Wishbone’s Pond
This pond is known as Wishbone’s Pond, named after a family dog whose ashes were spread here shortly after the trail was created. This pond is a quiet place to come and reflect on the legacy our pets leave behind and the tremendous paw prints they leave in our hearts.
The Railroad Excavation Ponds in Harmony Junction, a byproduct of the historic construction of railway lines, provide a unique insight into the interplay between industrial development and natural landscape transformation. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the expansion of the railway network across Prince Edward Island necessitated the excavation of large quantities of earth to create flat, stable railbeds.
This engineering feat, essential for the safe and efficient operation of trains, inadvertently led to the formation of these ponds. Over time, these man-made bodies of water have become integral components of the local ecosystem. They serve as habitats for various species of flora and fauna, transforming what was once a scar of industrial activity into thriving ecological niches. The presence of these ponds is a vivid reminder of the island's industrial heritage and its lasting impact on the landscape.
Today, they serve as natural sanctuaries, supporting diverse aquatic life and offering serene spots for community recreation and wildlife observation. The transformation of these ponds from industrial remnants to ecological havens is a powerful example of how nature can reclaim and repurpose human-altered landscapes, creating new opportunities for biodiversity and ecological sustainability.
